Dhaka, September 20, 2026 – Canada reaffirmed its commitment to the safe, dignified, and voluntary return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar during a meeting in Dhaka on Sunday between Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Ajit Singh and Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kobir.

Singh paid his maiden courtesy call on Kobir at the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the two sides discussed bilateral relations and repatriation for high-level engagements on the sidelines of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly.

According to Bangladesh’s state-run BSS, Kobir thanked Canada for its continued support for the Rohingya response. Singh, in turn, reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to a safe, dignified, and voluntary return process.

The Rohingya crisis remains a major issue for Bangladesh, which hosts a large refugee population that fled violence and persecution in Myanmar. Bangladesh has repeatedly called for conditions in Myanmar that would allow refugees to return safely and with dignity.

The meeting also covered broader areas of Bangladesh-Canada cooperation, including trade, climate action, energy and agriculture. The two sides expressed hope for high-level bilateral engagements during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

Kobir also sought Canada’s support for Bangladesh’s priorities on climate leadership and climate financing during its presidency of the UN General Assembly.

The Canadian High Commissioner raised the possibility of developing a framework for cooperation in agriculture, while both sides exchanged views on energy cooperation.

The meeting comes as Bangladesh continues diplomatic efforts to keep the Rohingya crisis on the international support agenda and seek greater international support for a sustainable solution to the crisis.
