Two Bangladeshis among 16 survivors after boat sinks near Baharchhara coast; another woman is still missing.

COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh — A boat carrying Rohingya refugees and two Bangladeshis sank off the coast of Teknaf in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district early Tuesday, killing a three-year-old child and a 25-year-old woman, police said.

Coast Guard personnel rescued 16 people alive and handed them over to Teknaf Model Police Station. Police recovered the bodies of the child and woman from the sea, while another woman remained missing, according to survivors.

The boat sank at about 1:00 a.m. near Karachi Para Sea beach in Baharchhara union, police said.

Among the 16 survivors were two Bangladeshi nationals who said they had been returning to Bangladesh after serving prison terms in Myanmar.

Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Saiful Islam confirmed the incident and said the two bodies had been sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsies.

“The Coast Guard rescued 16 people in connection with the sinking of a Rohingya-carrying boat in Baharchhara and handed them over to the police station,” Saiful said.

Police said they would question the survivors and verify their identities before taking further legal action.

“After questioning the rescued Rohingyas, we learned that they are residents of different camps in Bangladesh. They had travelled to Myanmar at various times, and the accident occurred while they were returning,” Saiful said.

Mohammad Abu Sayeed, an inspector in charge of the Baharchhara Investigation Centre, said the boat collided with an object near the shore before sinking.

Mohammad Korban Ali, a resident of Ukhia who was among those rescued, said he and a Buddhist man had been returning to Bangladesh after serving a one-year prison sentence in Myanmar.

“We were 19 people. A child and a woman died, while another woman is still missing,” he said.
