Dhaka, Bangladesh – Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman has called for a permanent solution to the Rohingya crisis inside Myanmar, saying Bangladesh cannot continue to host nearly 1.2 million refugees indefinitely.
Rahman made the remarks on Saturday while addressing the opening session of the three-day Bay of Bengal Conversation (BOBC) 2026, organized by the Center for Governance Studies (CGS) at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka.
“The crisis that originated in Myanmar must also find its permanent resolution within Myanmar,” Rahman said.
He reaffirmed that Bangladesh’s primary objective is to facilitate the swift, safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees currently sheltered in the country.
The prime minister said continued political support and adequate humanitarian funding from the international community would be essential to creating conditions for a sustainable return.
Rahman acknowledged that security conditions in Myanmar’s Rakhine State remain concerning, but stressed that Bangladesh cannot host such a large, displaced population indefinitely.
He also urged the international community to take more effective action on the crisis, saying Bangladesh has fulfilled its humanitarian responsibilities toward the Rohingya.
Rahman had previously delivered a similar message during high-level meetings on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, calling for greater international efforts toward resolving the crisis.
The BOBC 2026 conference is being held from October 3 to 5 under the theme “Fragments, Frontiers, and Futures: Navigating Power, Technology, and Trust in a World Rewritten.”
Nearly 200 speakers, diplomats, policymakers, and experts from more than 100 countries are participating in the conference. Among the prominent participants are former Serbian President Boris Tadić, former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed and former Malian Prime Minister Moussa Mara.
